The QueerAgendaYVR Manifesto

In October 2022, I ran for “Vancouver” City Council on a platform I termed, the QueerAgendaYVR. I was not elected, but below is the manifesto of my political vision:

The Manifesto.

  1. Guided by an ethics of incommensurability— settler futurity is relinquished for a decolonization elsewhere. LAND BACK.
  2. ‘Vancouver’ is in need of some healing.
  3. Healing is not possible without challenging the structures– like capitalism–that create and normalize inequity in our society.
  4. Healing encompasses fun, joy, rest and pleasure.

The QueerAgenda YVR is an ethical intervention to create possibility for a socially just ‘Vancouver’. It is informed from my lived experience as a brown queer cis-settler nurse working in the DTES and my degree in gender, race, sexuality and social justice.

Author: Kyra Philbert

Artist. Nurse. Scholar. A ciswoman settler on the unceded territories of Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm Nations. A compassionate mess. She believes in futures where we (and our planet) all are safe, loved, respected and 'enough'.
